The San Diego Women's Foundation Announces $45,000 Grant to Center to Help Fund the Center's Music Program
In June 2011, The San Diego Women's Foundation selected the San Diego Center for Children as a grantee/partner.
The grant will underwrite half the cost of the music program for one year. During this year, the Center will focus on measuring the impact music has on the lives of the children with objective outcomes.
The Foundation's responsiveness to the needs of the community and its rigorous and competitive grant process is well-known throughout the San Diego non-profit community.
Dave McCaslin, the Center's CEO said, "I am thrilled that The San Diego Women's Foundation recognizes the value of music and performing arts in getting children back on track who have experienced trauma, abuse or who have mental health challenges." Music provides the children with an additional outlet of healthy self-expression, and we believe that for some children music can help speed up their recovery.
In addition to the robust array of mental health and academic services the Center provides, children on our main campus learn to drum or play ukulele, guitar, piano, recorder or another instrument. They can also sing in the glee club or dance along to the music making.
A child's life needs to be full of both happy moments and skill building activities -- recreational music making provides both. It also connects children with their peers, it brings them joy, and helps them identify and develop hidden skills and talents. Music connects children to other cultures and allows them to participate in positive group activities.
McCaslin added, "The children who come to the Center have experienced great sadness in their lives, they need to also experience joy and healing."
Sundiata Kata, an employee of the Center for 42 years, is the Center's Music Director, and Dave Hall is our music teacher. They have created a robust music program for the children that includes music making, performance art, and music appreciation. The San Diego Center for Children is grateful for the generosity of The San Diego Women's Foundation.
