Programs and Services | The Academy
SAN DIEGO CENTER FOR CHILDREN ACADEMY
The San Diego Center for Children Academy (SDCCA) is a private and nonpublic school serving students in grades K through 12. All of the students at the Academy have Individual Education Plans which address their unique educational and social emotional needs. By combining appropriate curriculum and positive behavioral reinforcement, the Academy helps students succeed with their personal and academic needs. At the high school level there is an emphasis on teaching living skills as well as providing a secondary education.
Mission Statement The San Diego Center for Children Academy is dedicated to providing a safe, supportive environment that nurtures students through therapy and academics, and prepares them for integration into the global community.
SAN DIEGO CENTER FOR CHILDREN ACADEMY IS ACCREDITED BY THE WESTERN ASSOCIATION OF SCHOOLS AND COLLEGES.
The Individualized Education Program (IEP)
Being a parent is the most wonderful - and hardest - job in the world.
If you have a child with special needs, your job is no less wonderful,
but it can be more complicated. Your child's education is most likely
an area of great interest to you. As a child with a disability, he or
she may be eligible for special education services in school.
One of the most important parts of the special education process is
creating a plan for your child's education. This plan is called the Individualized
Education Program, or the IEP. The IEP is the foundation for your child's
education, and you are a very important member of the team that develops
it. Your child's IEP lists the specific special education services your
child will receive, based upon his or her individual needs. This is why
it is so important that you understand and help develop your child's
IEP.
Each public school child who receives special education and related
services must have an IEP. The IEP creates an opportunity for teachers,
parents, school administrators, related services personnel, and students
(when appropriate) to work together to improve educational results for
children with disabilities.
Our Educational Beliefs
- We support each child's/adolescent’s Individualized
Education Program (IEP) and reinstate the learning process so that
each child/adolescent makes measurable academic gain.
- We provide enriching resources like tutoring, computer instruction,
performing arts, and recreation.
- We teach accepted classroom behaviors that prepare students to succeed
in other academic settings.
- We look at what can we do to make the day better.
- We provide support to students so that they may not lose their
home for failing in school.
- We are changing the school experience and helping teach parents how
to learn to handle their children/adolescents at home.
- We can wrap services around the children/adolescents and assist them
in accessing the support services they need.
- We develop a program for each student; we do not stick them in a
program.
- We are child-centered, and we take seriously the goal of building
each student's success.
- We follow the California state standards, and make accommodations
as needed.
- Our focus is on behaviors first, and then strong academics.
- Children and adolescents cannot learn if they cannot control themselves.
What We Do To Help Your Child Succeed
Teachers, health care providers, and parents work together to make a
school a place where:
- Successes far outweigh failures;
- Achievements far outweigh frustrations;
- Mistakes are viewed as learning experiences;
- Unique strengths and talents take center stage;
- Staff and parents do not have to guess how to draw the lines; they
are rigid with much care and are drawn in the most delicate way possible;
- Our park-like setting offers a safe, secure environment;
- A staff ratio of one staff to every 4 students (1:4) assures individualized attention and closely supervised students; and
- Experienced child development counselors supervise recreation and
teach children and adolescents practical socialization skills.
