Programs and Services | Music Program
The Music and Recreation Therapy Programs available at the San Diego Center for Children are two of the most important healing services.
Matt, 9, arrived at SDCC with ADD, a low threshold for all stimulation, and a quick temper. Gradually, with support, Matt became more and more involved in music classes—he would even dance and perform with others. As Matt experienced success, his self-esteem increased, and his sense of accomplishment led him to become President of the SDCC Choir.
The magic and power of music is changing the lives of children at the San Diego Center for Children. Our Performing Arts Program is restoring trust and hope in children who have suffered abuse, trauma, or have severe developmental behavioral problems. Through music, our children are coping with their pain and aggressions.
Our hands-on Music Program, with Director, Sundiata Kata and his staff, offer multiple opportunities for children and adolescents to get involved in a positive musical experience of health and wellness.
Our program includes:
Kids With a Song choir
Drum circles
Blues Thursday when staff and kids enjoy music together
A therapeutic music program of Jazz, Rock, Blues, and Hip Hop
These musical activities reduce stress and were developed to be a creative outlet for the difficult emotions that the children process on a daily basis. Through the San Diego Center for Children’s Music Program, children and adolescents can express themselves and sense feelings of accomplishment.
Check it out! SDCC will be taking part in a joint research study with the Mind Body Wellness Center, Yamaha Corporation Music Division, and Dr. Barry Bittman, MD and CEO of the Mind Body Wellness Center. For additional information, click here. |
