We were recently recognized for our transparency with a 2018 Gold Seal on our GuideStar Nonprofit Profile. GuideStar is the world’s largest source of information on nonprofit organizations. More than 8 million visitors per year and a network of 200+ partners use GuideStar data to grow support for nonprofits.
In order to get the 2018 Gold Seal, we had to share important information with the public using our profile on GuideStar. Now our community members and potential donors can find in-depth information about our goals, strategies, capabilities, and progress. We’re shining a spotlight on the difference we help make in the world!
Our Summer Chef Demo Series has been amazing as our teens are having fun and learning important life skills through culinary!
Thank you to Chef Mikel Anthony of Cast Iron Culinary, Chef Michelle Cuaresma of Good Eats and Sweet Treats, and Chef Donald Coffman of Culinary Concepts Catering for stopping by our Clark Kitchen to lead such wonderful demos.
Chef Mikel taught our teens how to break down and fabricate a whole chicken, learn the names of each part and how to cook each of the pieces. The group made a nutritious chicken stock with some of the chicken, and the rest of the chicken pieces were used to make a tasty Filipino Chicken Adobo with a ginger and garlic topping served with basmati rice. Chef Michelle shared important techniques and tips for our teens to create their own delicious mac and cheese dish from scratch. And, lastly, Chef Donald led a demo on making a summer salad with peaches, feta cheese and toasted walnuts, and shared about the importance of making simple dishes that are both healthy, delicious and easy to make.
We’re looking forward to more demos later this month! If you are a local chef and would like to participate in our year-round chef mentoring program, please contact Tina Reyes at email@example.com.
Employees from Aldrich Advisors volunteered their time and painting skills last Friday to help with some very important campus revitalization projects! Several bedrooms in our Residential cottages were treated to fresh coat of paint, along with a few other structures around our main campus in Linda Vista. Thank you Aldrich Advisors for spending time at the Center to help enhance our campus!
If your workplace would like to “give back” through a service project, we invite you to visit our JoyMakers page to learn about current opportunities.
Positive changes experienced by my child: “They became medically stable, caught their grades up, became more able to have healthy friendships, stopped harming herself and others.”
What positive changes were experience by you: “Lowering stress and watching her make progress.”
Other feedback: “Wrap was really helpful in getting our family resources and to the next stage in our family’s life.”
We thank this family for taking the time to share this feedback, and also our amazing team members who played a huge part in this family’s success!
Our Summer Chef Demo Series is in full swing in our Clark Kitchen!
Each day this week, and also throughout the summer, local chefs will lead a healthy cooking class to our teens as part of our Successful Transitions Program. Yesterday, chef and owner of Chinitas Pies, Chef Christina Ng, taught our teens how to make vegetable galettes using local heirloom tomatoes and seasonal summer squashes along with a fresh basil pesto. Plus, they also learned about edible flowers of which they topped off on their tasty galettes!
One teen shared, “I had a lot of fun and I thank Chef Christina. Cooking helps soothe me. I don’t feel like freaking out and it makes me happy.”
A big thank you to Chef Christina for volunteering and sharing her expertise with our teens! Thank you as well to all chefs participating in this week’s demos: Chef Lisa Ortiz, Chef Mikel Anthony of Cast Iron Culinary, Chef Michelle Cuaresma of Good Eats and Sweet Treats, and Chef Donald Coffman of Culinary Concepts Catering.

We’re so proud of the children and teens we serve, who through perseverance and strength are able to RISE UP from their mental health struggles. Watch this short video to hear directly from our youth, and how the array of therapeutic programs that we offer helps them in their journey to find hope and healing.
Creative expression is an important therapeutic tool for the youth we serve, whether through fine arts, writing, photography, music, singing and more. A high school senior receiving our school-based therapeutic services at North County Academy (NCA) was inspired to write a poem about her experience of attending prom. Enjoy reading this student’s beautiful poem titled, “Moonlit Night.”
I never thought I’d see the day
When a magical door would open for me
“Starry Night” shines and lights the way
For my inner self has been set free
A life-changing experience I will never forget
Glittering stars to rainbow-lit ceilings
Finally time to let go, it suddenly hits
Of the pain in the past I have been feeling
From the lonely and sad outcasted girl
(Now that feels like decades before)
To boldest pink rockstar, shimmering pearls
Fluttery as an angel’s flight across the floor
Thank you, Thank you, staff of NCA
For a breathtaking, spectacular night
This wondrous event has taught me the way
To bravely open up my eyes to new sights
Nobody, not one, got left behind or caught up in strife
Those like me were able to come out of our shells
Without you, I never would have had the time of my life
For years to come, this will be the most exciting story to tell!
