Center Teens + Staff Help Keep San Diego Beaches Clean

Female volunteer at beach cleanup

30 students have participated in the beach cleanups and together they’ve collected over 50 pounds of trash and recyclables!

For the second year in a row, the San Diego Center for Children has partnered with I Love A Clean San Diego and their Adopt-a-Beach program!  Both the students and staff at our North County Academy program are able to get out of the classroom and have a positive impact on the surrounding community. So far, 30 students have participated in the beach cleanups and together they collected over 50 pounds of trash and recyclables in the last year!

The ultimate goal for each child in any Center program is to gain the skills needed to transition into a place of health, happiness and overall personal success. The San Diego Center for Children uses the EMBRACE Model, which involves a number of factors (such as therapy, education and community) in the healing process. The “Community” aspect of our EMBRACE Model focuses on giving our children opportunities such as beach clean-ups to contribute back to their community and gain a sense of higher purpose and achievement.

Not only is it fun for the students to spend time at the beach, but they also get to interact with the community and often receive praise from people at the beach telling them what a great job they are doing. And further, after starting the beach cleanup program, the middle- and high-school students have taken great pride in keeping their campus clean, while also picking up trash and litter at the local park, and have even asked to organize a park cleanup!
