It started with a simple letter.
Keith Wilson, then President + CSO of Takeda Pharmaceuticals in San Diego – and member of the Center’s Board – wanted to see if he could get the CEO of Takeda in Japan to consider a donation to help the San Diego Center for Children.
“I wanted to convince Takeda to give a donation to the San Diego Center for Children that would match or exceed gifts given to other charities that Takeda supports in its home country of Japan,” explained Keith.
In the letter, Keith described how the Center helped children and teens struggling with behavioral and mental health challenges and invited Mr. Hasegawa to join him on a tour to see first-hand how a grant from Takeda could help impact these lives.
Keith went on to write, “From personal observation, I know the full potential of these children can only be achieved if socially-aware companies like Takeda help to make their dreams a reality.”
Takeda went on to donate the seed funding ($250,000) to kick-start the behavioral health assessments offered to children and youth within the Center’s current programs. The Center soon realized the benefit these assessment services would have if offered to the community; and with a second grant from Takeda, the Family Wellness Center was born.
Now open in La Mesa, the Family Wellness Center offers excellent and affordable assessments, counseling, therapy and parenting skills classes to meet the growing and varying behavioral health needs of children – and their families – throughout San Diego. Thanks to the incredible on-going support of Takeda, the behavioral health assessments once only available to our clients are now a core service available to the public.
