Overview
Located in Carlsbad, North County Academy is a San Diego County Office of Education school that is created through a collaborative partnership between North Coastal Consortium of Special Education and San Diego Center for Children. North County Academy serves students, grades 5th-12th, who are placed in the program through their Individual Education Plan. The purpose of the collaborative partnership is to offer a school designed to meet the unique academic and therapeutic needs of students with behavioral health challenges that affect their academic success.
Therapeutic Team and Approach
The San Diego Center for Children represents the therapeutic team at North County Academy that include the following highly-skilled staff:
- Program Manager
- Licensed Therapists
A strong emphasis of strength-based approaches allows treatment plans and goals to focus on the student’s areas of interest and high confidence. The Center’s therapeutic support in this program engages evidence-based practices, as well as highly-effective adjunctive therapies that allow multiple opportunities for learning and healing. Therapeutic components include:
- Individual and family therapy
- Group therapies
- Expressive Arts and Music
- Recreation – sports, games, social activities
- Gardening
- Independent Living Skills
- Crisis Intervention
- Substance abuse psycho-education and community linkage
- Crisis Intervention
Academic Team
The San Diego County Office of Education provides the following staff:
- Principal
- Certified Special Education and Regular Education Teachers, following the curriculum of the Common Core State Standards
- Instructional Assistants (academic focus)
- Occupational Therapist
- Speech and Language Therapist
- Workability Counselor
Preparing for Transition
The goal of North County Academy is to help students acquire the skills needed to re-integrate into a more comprehensive and less restrictive setting. In preparing students for this transition, North County Academy mirrors many of the traditional school experiences so that each student can enjoy and benefit from typical extracurricular activities:
