Independent living skills are the skills and abilities a person needs to function independently as an adult. In this section, you will find programs and services that assist teens and young adults with general life skills, money management, transportation, pregnancy and parenting, advocacy skills, and legal needs in San Diego County.

Just in Time for Foster Youth: Financial Fitness Program

While most young people can ask their parents or family for advice regarding cars, housing, and other financial situations, our transitioning foster youth often don’t have that support system. JIT Asset Advisors help individual youth or groups with essential skills on how to manage their assets. The program also provides a savings plan incentive with the ability to match up to $4,500.

Just in Time for Foster Youth: LEAP Council Program

LEAP builds the capacity for young former foster youth to share their stories, connect, inspire and advocate on behalf of fellow current and former foster youth. In providing networking experiences, public speaking opportunities and strategic sharing training, LEAP provides Ambassadors with the necessary skill sets to be effective and knowledgeable liaisons to Just in Time’s services, develop professional leadership skills, and give back through youth engagement, community outreach and event planning.

Just in Time for Foster Youth: My First Home Program

My First Home Guide Volunteers will assist you with small and large furnishings as well as provide guidance on smart purchasing and expenses related to the home. Interested individuals may fill out an online application on the website listed below.

LGBT Community Center: Hillcrest Youth Center

The Hillcrest Youth Center (HYC) is the only drop-in and recreational center in San Diego County dedicated to the needs of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning and HIV+ (LGBTQ+) youth. HYC is committed to providing a safe and affirming space for LGBTQ+ youth.

McAlister Institute-North Inland Women and Adolescent Regional Recovery Center

McAlister Institute’s regional recovery centers are outpatient programs for adults struggling with substance abuse and other drug-related problems, including co-occurring mental health issues.

Perinatal Detox is a short-term, non-medical residential program specifically designed to help pregnant women detox from alcohol and other drugs in a safe, and supportive environment. This program is proud to report 100% drug-free births, and many women go on to receive further treatment and ongoing support at Kiva.
