Overview
Parent Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) is an evidenced based program that gives caregivers the positive parenting skills to manage their child's emotional and behavioral difficulties through positive attention alone using real-time coaching.
Parents/Caregivers will learn…
- Feel less angry
- Improve attention and focus
- Learn to cooperate
- Strengthen the already warm relationship with their child
- Obey directions the first time
- Reduce aggressive or destructive behaviors
Who is PCIT for?
Children ages 2-7 who:
- Refuse or defy adult requests
- Lose temper easily
- Start fights or hurt others
- Have short attention spans
- Have difficulty sitting still or waiting their turn
Parents/Caregivers can expect
- Parents/Caregivers will participate in weekly coaching sessions with their child in the clinic.
- Therapists will coach parents on implementing positive parenting skills in real time using a bug-in-the-ear device.
- Parents/Caregivers will learn and implement positive parenting and discipline skills to manage their child's behaviors.
PCIT is a two-phase treatment model. In the first phase, parents/caregivers will learn play therapy skills to increase desired behavior and reduce attention seeking behaviors. In the second phase, parents/caregivers will learn specific discipline techniques to help their child obey directions and decrease problem behaviors. Each phase takes between 5-6 sessions, although exact time depends on regular attendance, home practice, and demonstrating mastery of the skills.
