1 in 5 children in our community are struggling with a behavioral or emotional disorder.
Of these, only 20% will actually have their disorder diagnosed and treated.
The age by when HALF of all lifetime mental illness cases will begin.
Many children will go years, if not decades, before they receive their first opportunity at treatment. This not only is more difficult to treat as the child ages, but allows other mental disorders to occur during this time.
Over 90% of children and teens who commit suicide have a behavioral health disorder.
It’s the 3rd leading cause of death for teenagers and young adults — more than cancer, heart disease, AIDS, birth defects, stroke, pneumonia, influenza, and chronic lung diesease combined.
50% of children (ages 14-17) who have a behavioral health disorder drop out of high school.
70% of boys and girls in the juvenile detention system have at least one diagnosable behavioral health disorder.
We are incarcerating children and teens for their actions and behaviors without giving an opportunity to treat their illness.
For every $1 spent on children’s behavioral health treatment today, the community saves $7 down the road in prisons, homelessness, job loss and productivity, and other social services.
People with behavioral health disorders are 3x more likely
to end up in the criminal justice system versus the hospital.

The annual economic cost in our country from childrens’ behavioral health disorders is $247 billion. These expenses include behavioral health providers and programs, primary medical care, education, child welfare, foster care and juvenile justice system, but don’t cover the extensive cost of children growing up without essential living skills, hope and quality of life.
