Enjoying Family Time in the Community

By Rachel Smith, Enhanced Care Management Supervisor

As summer approaches and children have more time at home, it can be hard to limit their time on electronics and get them excited about community activities. Not only does our city offer some unique ways to get out and have fun as a family, but there are also many benefits to getting involved in the community and getting active as a family.

Whether you’re a family that likes to play sports, attend big events, or something less crowded and quieter is more your speed, finding ways to get involved in the community and get moving outdoors is a great way to connect with each other, and perhaps even meet some new friends. Building your circle of social supports is an important step to helping you and your child feel a sense of belonging in your community. Maybe you’re hoping to give back through volunteer work. This is a great way to teach children the value of contributing and working with others, and you can model these values for your child by doing it with them. Feeding America and Surfrider Beach cleanups are just a couple family friendly volunteer opportunities in San Diego that combine fun and hard work. Whether you’re focused on fun or looking to volunteer your time, getting out and trying new things can help children overcome anxiety and build their confidence. Keep an eye out for opportunities to engage their interests, or even explore new interests together.

Connecting as a family out in the community doesn’t have to involve planned events or spending money. If your family is interested in enjoying the outdoors, simply going for a walk together can have positive impacts on emotional well-being. Getting one’s body moving and connecting to nature is proven to help with emotional and behavioral regulation, can reduce stress, and increase positive mood for both you and your child. When out on the trail, you can play games using your child’s 5 senses like I-spy or even print an outdoor scavenger hunt. Other ideas for practicing mindfulness together outdoors include bird watching, flower picking, collecting shells, or visiting a new park or trail each month.
